* I’m Kristen Panzer. Life is short, so I decided I would spend it doing what I love — making dogs gorgeous again. In the fall of 2022 I took an online groom tech course, quit my office job, and landed my first job bathing dogs in the back of a groom shop. You’re sure you want to do this, they asked me. Yeah, I was sure. How hard could it be, right?

Wrong! It was super hard!

The groom shop was chaotic. Dogs were scared. We were doing things, but those weren’t the things I learned in my courses.

Most days I felt like I was being punked. They didn’t really expect me to wrestle dogs, certainly not with sharp, bladed tools in my hand? And why the heck were we shaving double coated dogs? I wasn’t about to do that, not me, no sir. So I quit!

Had I come to the end of my dog grooming journey?

No way! I got my learn on. I took more online courses and I went to in-person groom school. I read books and I sought out industry leaders and learned everything I could from them. And I kept working in groom shops. I even certified as a groomer in one of the big box chains.

I studied canine skin and coat. I learned there are 15 different kinds. And that the coat is a functioning extension of the skin. (It’s not just for show like the hair on our heads is, mostly.) The different coat types require different kinds of care, that means different products and different techniques, techniques like carding and handstripping and humane, pain-free dematting, and so much more. And I learned that good grooming starts in the tub, with a thorough cleanse and quality products. It was thrilling!

Then I discovered the Fear Free approach to grooming and I certified with them. I learned to recognize signs of fear, anxiety, and stress and how to respond compassionately. I learned how to keep dogs calm, comfortable, and cooperative during grooms. Game changer! I could begin to envision having my own shop one day.

Some days I feel like I found the holy grail of dog skin and coat care — an easy, gentle way to alleviate the skin issues that plague our beloved pets and confound us.
